TWEETS OVERDRIVE: THE DEATH OF CONVERSATION, OUR MEDITERRANEAN SOSOLISO.

My reflections today on twitter concerning the graveyard silence from our so called leaders in respect of the burial ceremony for the 26 Nigerian souls lost in what I give the nomenclature MEDITERRANEAN SOSOLISO.

These reflections that were spearheaded by @PObahiagbon tweet ''The girls were buried today. The silence from our Leaders, very loud...'' This tweet ginger my responses or reflections that follow in DEATH OF CONVERSATION with other participants/Interlopers whose twitter handles I would not mention in this piece.

ME
These are girls who embarked on perilous Italian/European adventures to prostitute themselves or become drug mules on the street corners of Milan, Turin, Gualdo Tadino Perugia, Bergamo and Sicily knowing fully the Armageddon of life in the hands of human traffickers.

INTERLOPER 5. And you know this for a fact? As in you spoke to them before they left?

ME
When I was studying in Italy in the early 80's at the Università per stranieri di Perugia we never saw this disgraceful mannerism exhibited by Nigerians nowadays marooning themselves on street corners selling their womanhood while their male counterparts engage in drug dealing.

I do not have to speak to them, this is a statement of fact based on research. They will end up in prostitution in Europe that is if they were not already prostituted from their transition points in Niger Agadez, Libya, before being shipped like slaves on a rickety boat to Italy.

We need to stop rat race mentality popular amongst the youthful population of Nigeria thinking there is an El-dorado in Europe. It is an illusion a tantalization. If you have the kind of money spent by those taking the risk please invest it in a sole proprietorship (SMEs) at home.

INTERLOPER 1. Otunba you missed the point. And to correct you I have lived in Italy for over 15years ,never seen drug with my eyes.

ME
Because you have lived in Italy for 15years is not sufficient nor necessary for you to see drug with your own eyes but that does not mean there are no drugs on street corners or prostitutes marooning. You do not work in the field I assume, if you do you will see enough to worry about.

Because a man and woman live in a posh environment in Nigeria and they have not experienced Armed Robbery before does that negate the fact that there are Armed Robbers or robbery situations daily in Nigeria. I do not get the logic of your statement.

INTERLOPER 3. Otunba, we need to ask why these girls left Nigeria for Italy in search of greener pastures. The ans is the current state we find ourselves in Nigeria as a result of bad and selfish leaders. We need to join hands to prevent future occurrences and stop apportioning blames.

ME
Leadership is not the sole problem, individual responsibility and societal value system cum familial orientation in respect of materialistic consumption lifestyle are some of the problems. We can't always blame everything on leadership. We are all leaders in our own corners.

This is like our usual argument blaming Colonialism or the British for our woeful performance socioeconomic and development wise when in reality we are the crux of our underdevelopment broadly speaking. We need to stop buck-passing or blaming leadership, at least you elected them.

INTERLOPER 2. Oga, what's ur point sir? Are u justifying the "loud" silence of our leaders because of what some of our girls engage in overseas? These are people daughters, mothers, sisters, and not showing empathy is inhuman. The "loud" silence will be thrown at us too one day. Yes,one day.

ME
I don't really see what our leaders have got 2 do with this disastrous human tragedy beyond probe. You can't stop people 4rm traveling there are enough guidelines out there 4rm NAPTIP. Not showing empathy is also human because it is an individual experience and not the holy grail.

INTERLOPER 3. That's not what I meant. When we have bad leaders, what will children going to emulate to become good ambassadors? Some people learn to be good or bad(social learning theory). Let the leaders model good behaviour and see how our youths will think positively.

ME
Do not emulate the so called leaders let the youths emulate their immediate i.e Father/Mother. Trying to become someone outside your immediacy is problematic. If youths have good guardianship from home they would not go searching for symbolism outside their familial surroundings.

INTERLOPER 1. You are not still coming up with solutions.

ME
You never asked for solutions in your previous tweet and it is not my responsibility to find solutions to the myriad of problems facing those risking their lives on rickety boats to Europe via Sahara desert, Libya.

But if you insist. My advice to prospective Nigerian youths contemplating embarking on such perilous journey is to stay home and do something with the resources about to be expended on disastrous adventures.

Some spent/about to spend 2mil/5mil naira on this journey, funds that can be invested wisely in Nigeria. Nigerian youths should look inward there are so many opportunities for these youths who have funds to invest but they are looking at the wrong side of the picture.

You do not have to agree with my viewpoints but you cannot stop me from exercising my right to freedom of expression also in the silence of our leaders you can hear the truth and know the solutions to preventing another MEDITERRANEAN SOSOLISO.

OTUNBA ADE ILEMOBADE IS A PHILOSOPHER.
