SUCCESSFULNESS: LEADERSHIP, POWER IS NOT ABOUT ETERNAL GRACE, PRAISE AND ADORATION.
This is a very difficult topic but of immense importance to the development of our geo-economic and socio-political architecture if we really have any ambition of moving from potentiality into an advance Nation of ''scientio-technological'' discoveries.
I am talking here about a Nation that has graduated beyond the limitation of perpectual potentiality and such graduation in most cases shall manifest through leadership imbued with intelligent application of power to rewrite the fundamental structural deficit engrained in our geo-economic and socio-political architecture so as to eradicate the scourge of ''potentialism'' which has become a national sloganism.
It is a commonsensical notion in our clime that there is a dearth of leadership in Nigeria and this is supported with empirical cum heuristic evidences presented to us via life experiences as a people directly affected by this leadership blackhole.
How can we get ourselves out of this quantum singularity that is holding us down development-wise?.
Obviously, we are aware of the fact that the concept leadership and power relationship are difficult as earlier mentioned above because there is no generalised agreement in respect of behavoiural traits or absolute paradigms of a good leader. Moreover, being a good leader is not an automatic qualification for being an effective Manager of Men, Resources and Power equation.
''A person does not become a leader by virtue of the possession of some combination of traits, but the pattern of personal characteristics must bear some relevant relationships to the characterristics, activities and goals of the followers. Thus leadership must be conceived in terms of the interaction of variables which are in constant change and flux'' -Stogdill.
What is leadership? What is a successful leadership? What is the end game of power relationship/equation?.
Leadership is not about superiority or heroism neither is Power about seeking eternal grace, praise and adoration. It is important to understand that any leader whose ultimate aim is garnering sycophantic followership is not qualified to be in such position because leadership is about service and civil servantship. Therefore, successful leadership is about civil servantship whose pattern of personal characteristics bear some relevant relationships to the characterristics, activities and goals of the followers and whose end game of power relationship/equation is deeply service orientation.
What I am saying here is that leadership is not an exclusive preserve of egotistic heros, seeking eternal grace, praise and adoration from followers rather the success of any leader depends on His/Her ability to empower the collectives, whatever psychological satisfaction a leader enjoys by empowering His/Her people should be a private matter contingent on the deep rootedness of such achievement in service orientation.
Why praise sing a leader especially political leadership who is elected to provide dividend of democracy to His/Her electorates. I do not see any reason or need for adoration or praise because such individual(s) are paid by the people to provide services using public funds contributed by taxpayers or via incomes generated from various governmental activities. Put it succinctly they are elected civil servants who are not doing us any favour rather it is their responsibility to do things relevant and in relationships to the characterristics, activities and our goals as sovereign citizens.
Nigerians stop the praise singing, please repudiate sycophancy and demand your sovereign rights from your elected officials, question them in public fora take a cue from Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi ll. It is your fundamental right to ask relevant questions and seek answers from officialdom.
Those venerating political office holders as demi-gods are bloodsuckers with parochial interest I mean how can we be talking about individual(s) desire for leadership in the 21st century on the basis of seeking egotistic eternal grace, praise and adoration. Aahbaaa!!!
Our leaders must be looking in the direction of their ability to influence, impact positively on the populace rather than seeking vainglory that is ephemeral in nature. Stop seeking power. Start seeking influence. Stop seeking vainglory. Start seeking impactfulness. Note, it is only influence that will endure because power is transient.
