COMMUNICATION RHETORIC: THE PAUCITY OF POLITICAL CORRECTNESS, A QUESTION OF IDIOSYNCRACY.
“Emotional versatility is the art of making peace with the entire emotional spectrum by honing your capacity to channel various feelings along creative and constructive lines. It is not about controlling or condemning your feelings. It's about conducting your feelings in a self-edifying way.”― T.K. Coleman
Communication is a seesaw affair an action contigent on disseminating information amongst individuals, groups or spatio temporally and it can be verbal or non-verbal with an underlying aim from the sender as being the achievement of some kind of understanding from the receiver(s) consciously or unconsciously.
Effective communication as a model of deliberative political architecture involving the public and the government must be to avoid misunderstandings which could act as barriers to comprehension. Therefore, clarity and honesty are prerequisites for moving forward. This is against the view expressed by emotive communication ''experts'' who are of the opinion that paucity of political correctness in the discourse at each stage in the communication process is a barrier to effective communication.
Note: Political correctness is never a necessary/sufficient requirement for effective communication in my view.
The roles of public relation industrialism acting as go between in the discourse involving Political correctness and straight talking government officialdom cannot be divorced from jounalistic bias and editorial influences because everything depends primarily on the mannerism in which the media portrays one school of thought over the other in shaping the mindset of the populace rather than the substance/content of the message.
The conditioning process adopted by public relation industrialism can be self-victimization, emotional blackmail, or both. There is no unanimity approval wise for these paradigms but they are often used as a manipulative instrumentarium to shepherd public opinion into a particularistic mode.
We have seen this mechanism employed by so many bourgeois writers in discussing the recent presidential interview aired by Al-Jazeera, wherein the president was on point by making it clear that no forex subsidy for schooling abroad but if parents can afford it nothing stops them from getting forex from the parallel market (Emphasis mine). Note those who send their kids to school overseas are not poor Nigerians.
I am not at all flabbergasted when bourgeois writers and nouveau riche employ emotional blackmail to promote their own interests and development of their kids to the detriment of the nation and the poor who cannot send their kids to school abroad.
Their methodology is to use demagoguery coated in activism predicated on the theme of politically correct beliefs by attacking every statements, words, language and action of the President on this subject matter.
They posit under the camouflage of public opinion that statements made during the said interview was not sensitive to the general populace therefore they claimed in their articles that it is offensive for the President to straight talk that he can afford to send his kids abroad and any other Nigerians who can afford to do the same are free to do so in so far as they do not make any demand on forex subsidy.
In my view this is a fair statement from the president.
The emergence of internet and live broadcast have fundamentally transformed the nature of political communication in such a mannerism that the so called ''public opinion'' is a logical construct manipulable by various actors and agents due to its inherent malleability as a manufactured organism. Therefore, to claim superior knowledge of what, when and how the public would reacte to a given statement by public officials is tantamount to overstretching ones epistemic justification into the realm of human psychosocial behaviour.
''mediated political communication in the public sphere can facilitate deliberative legitimation processes in complex societies only if a self-regulating media system gains independence from its social environments and if anonymous audiences grant a feedback between an informed elite discourse and a responsive civil society.''-Jürgen Habermas
Let us leave the perception of statements from officialdom to an independent minded audiences/citizenry mediating between an informed elite discourse and a responsive civil society rather than an agenda driven media system bent on spoon feeding us with their socio-engineerd manipulative conceptualization of what should be our emotional responses to official statements.
We are free independent citizens looking at life from diverse prism and conceptualizing interpretative flexibility within our milieu of language, philosophy, social construction and cultural relativistic autonomy, please do not attempt to predetermine our emotional state to official proclamations.
